| Anselmo: A Surrogate Father Anselmo: A Surrogate Father The relationship between Anselmo and Robert Jordan is almost like father and son. Robert Jordan's father committed suicide many years ago, and now Anselmo has kind of fallen in to his shoes. Also, Anselmo and his late wife never had any children of their own, so now Anselmo passes on ideas and beliefs to Jordan. The father-son relationship that these two men possess can easily be seen in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Robert Jordan learns many things from Anselmo throughout the story. One significant thing that Anselmo passes on to Jordan is his spiritual beliefs. Early in the book we learn about how Robert Jordan and Kashkin worked together. We hear of how Jordan shot Kashkin when Kashkin was mortally wounded. After spending time with Anselmo, Jordan begins to see the atrocities of killing, and how much effect it has on other people's lives. When Jordan kills the cavalryman on the second morning, he investigates the soldier's belongings and finds that he has a fiancé. Jordan sees how horrible killing really is. Near the end of the novel, Robert Jordan finally sees what Anselmo has seen all along. He realizes that not only killing, but also war itself, is unnecessary. Anselmo has always felt that killing was wrong but he must do it anyway. He has never seen the sense in killing and hates the fact the he must confess such a horrible sin. Now, with Robert Jordan's new found love of Maria, and fresh outlook on life, he tries to send a message to General Golz to cancel the attack. All Jordan really wants is to leave the war and spend the rest of his life with his new love Maria.
